Freezing nights means freezing pipes! If you are a homeowner then you probably have at least one outdoor water spigot. As winter approaches, it's important to prepare those outdoor spigots
for the cold and prevent them from freezing and bursting creating a winter disaster!
Pre winter draining is the most important measure to take. It involves draining your lines before the first freeze every winter. To do that, locate and turn off the valve to the outside water. Go outside and remove hoses, splitters, and any other attachments to allow the line to drain properly. Then turn on all spigots and allow them to fully drain and turn off when complete.
Another measure you can take is installing a frost free hose bib. This will completely replace your old spigot and runs several inches into the side of your house where the water shut off valve is located. This can often be a difficult and confusing process and should be installed by professionals.
One last protective measure you can take is to provide those outdoor spigots a bit of insulation. You are able to purchase styrofoam or cloth covers at any hardware store and install yourself. They hook or tie on to the spigot and are simple and easy to remove when winter is over.
